Andrew and Heather made their first cake in March of 2003 for the shared birthday party of their niece and nephew. After that, making cakes was merely done as favors for family and friends to celebrate the special occasions in their lives. It was Heather’s responsibility to make the cakes taste good, and it was up to Andrew to make them look good. Eventually, party goers outside of the Galgocis’ circle of acquaintances soon began to inquire about cakes for their own events as well. Before they knew it, Andrew and Heather had clientele and their hobby had grown into a very small business venture.
The Galgocis, being people of strong faith, felt uncomfortable profiting from abilities they considered to be God-given gifts. They wanted to do something meaningful with the money they made from the cakes. Fortunately, their church community provided them with a perfect solution—Heifer International.
Every year their small congregation at Trinity United Church in Warren, NJ collects $5,000 to purchase what is called an Ark from Heifer International. They determined that any additional proceeds from each cake sale would go to help support this worthwhile cause.
Why Heifer? Ever hear the expression, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime?” Well, that’s exactly what Heifer International does to combat poverty and end world hunger. Heifer provides livestock and training, bringing sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. Their animals provide recipients with both food and reliable income, as agricultural products such as milk, eggs and honey can be traded or sold at market. The core of Heifer’s model is called “Passing on the Gift.” This means families share the training they receive, and pass on the first female offspring of their livestock to another family. This extends the impact of the original gift, allowing a once impoverished family to become donors and full participants in improving their communities.
The goal of every Heifer project is to help families achieve self-reliance, and by ordering from AH Cakes, you can be part of that process as well.
